How To Make Oral Health Fun for Your Kids

How To Make Oral Health Fun for Your Kids - Blackburn Shoppes Dental Centre - Ottawa dentist

Is brushing and flossing an epic battle between your and your kids every night? We get it – oral health is a crucial part of your child’s development but your kids simply aren’t interested. Can you blame them? Forcing an awkward toothbrush with strange-tasting toothpaste in your child’s mouth often causes them discomfort – where is the joy in that? As parents, it is your duty to make oral health fun for your kids so they can learn to love and appreciate their oral health. As paediatric dentists, we are here to provide you with some tips to make oral health fun for your kids.

Tip #1 – Talk About Oral Hygiene

If you think about it, regular oral hygiene and dentist visits can be scary for kids. A daily task that causes them discomfort can be daunting, while a visit to a new place with new people can be intimidating. The best solution to this issue is simply to talk to your kids about oral hygiene. Use age-appropriate language to explain why they need to brush and floss their teeth after eating. Use positive imagery to explain who a dentist is and how they will help them keep their teeth strong and healthy. Preparing your child for their trip to the dentist is the first step to success.

Tip #2 – Read Stories/Watch TV Shows About Dental Care

Our second tip for successful dental care for your children is to include some of their favourite things in their education: books, tv show and movies! Popular children’s books and television series often feature a trip to the dentist. Some great examples include Peppa Pig, Caillou and Bubble Guppies. When your child gets to see their favourite character’s trip to the dentist, they will be more willing to go to the dentist themselves. Make sure the media you show your children present the dentist in a positive light, or risk promoting dental anxiety.

Tip #3 – Make It A Family Affair

An important part of your child’s willingness to cooperate with their oral health is to set a good example as parents. Children adore their parents and want to be just like them; show them that you prioritize your brushing and flossing routine and they will follow suit. Make oral health a family affair by taking care of it together; perhaps play some fun music and dance around. If brushing and flossing feels like a game each morning and night, your kids will be eager to join in.

Tip #4 – Let Them Pick Their Toothbrush and Toothpaste

In this day and age, we are lucky to have many different toothbrush and toothpaste options. While some options are simply more practical or efficient, some options are more fun. Give your child the freedom to choose their own toothbrush, whether it features their favourite cartoon character or their favourite colour. Most toothpaste companies also have toothpaste for kids with fun flavours like bubblegum, grape and watermelon. If your child’s toothpaste is appealing to their taste buds, they will be more likely to engage in their oral care.

Tip # 5 – Create a Rewards System

Many kids are driven by rewards. Create a reward system for their brushing and flossing routine. Each time they successfully brush and floss, add a sticker to their chart or a nickel into their piggybank. Eventually, your kids will associate oral care with a positive reinforcement and will be eager to participate in taking care of their teeth.
