Dental Care During The Holidays: How To Do It Right

Happy Holidays! ‘Tis the season of silent nights, snowy days, and sweets all around. When you find yourself surrounded my sugar plums, candy canes, and Christmas cookies, it feels easier to be naughty than it does to be nice. Luckily, Dr. Plant has a few tricks up her sleeve to help keep your smile merry and bright!

Establish a routine

It’s easy to keep your teeth happy over the holidays if to stick to your schedule. Brushing for two minutes, twice a day can make all the difference.

To brush your teeth effectively, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Gently brush your pearly whites with short strokes. Use a back-and-forth motion to brush along the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Don’t forget your tongue! Brushing your tongue using a few back-to-front strokes to removes bacteria that can cause bad breath.

Mind over matter

The simplest way to avoid cavities is to skip the sweets entirely. Cookies are nice treats, but take a cue from Santa’s reindeer and reach for the carrots instead. Not only are you looking out for your smile, you’re helping your heart, too!

Stay hydrated

From peppermint lattes to egg nog, there are all sorts of ways to quench your thirst over the holidays. All that sugar can break down the enamel on your teeth and cause decay. Do yourself a favour and stick to water. H2O keeps you hydrated and keeps your smile strong and healthy. Cheers!
