Halloween is Coming – Should You Eat Candy?

Many of us love Halloween because of all the delicious candy and chocolate we get to eat. We think that because it is Halloween, we can get away with munching on as much sugar as we can, and we can get away with it. But the truth is, there is no free pass for sugar on our teeth, even during Halloween.

Colgate mentions, that according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NICDR), “the mouth is full of hundreds of bacteria, many of which are beneficial to the oral ecosystem. However, certain harmful oral bacteria actually feed on the sugars you eat to create acids that destroy the tooth enamel, which is the shiny, protective outer layer of the tooth. Cavities are a bacterial infection created by acids, that cause your teeth to experience a hole in them. Without treatment, cavities can progress past the enamel and into the deeper layers of the tooth, causing pain and possible tooth loss.”

This is why it is so important to rinse, brush, and floss our teeth after every meal – especially after meals that are high in sugar. We should brush and floss our teeth every morning and night, but if you can take that extra step in rinsing, brushing, and flossing even after every meal – your teeth will stay fresh, clean, and healthy!

The great thing to note is that if you do want to eat sugars during Halloween, you can try to avoid sticky or chewy candy which tends to get stuck in our teeth and the sugars stay there for longer. Chocolate is a great alternative since it melts faster, less of the sugar tends to stay on your teeth.

Regardless of which type of treat you decide to enjoy, always remember to RBF: Rinse, Brush, and Floss. Follow these 3 simple steps as often as possible every day, and your teeth will love you for it!
