What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

While many school-age kids may dream of being a dentist when they grow up, not many kids fantasize about someday becoming a dental hygienist. Why is that? Although we see our dental hygienists at least twice a year at our bi-annual check-ups, it is fair to say that not many people actually know about all the responsibilities dental hygienists hold. They play an incredibly important role in our oral health.

So, because October is National Dental Hygiene Month, we would like to celebrate by answering the question, “What does a dental hygienist do?” and saying a huge “THANK YOU” to our dental hygienists for all that they do for us.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

If a dentist is Batman, then a dental hygienist is their trusted sidekick, Robin. On a typical day, a dental hygienist cleans their patients’ teeth, examines their mouth for signs of disease and teaches proper oral hygiene. In summary, they provide preventative oral care to their patients under a dentist’s supervision.

A dental hygienist may be the first person you see when seated in the dentist chair. They will ask you about your recent oral and overall health, as well as about any medication you are taking. Ideally, you will update your dental hygienist on everything going on regarding your oral health since your last visit.

Next, your dental hygienist may take x-rays of your teeth and gums. They will develop these images for your dentist to analyze. These x-rays are a great way for your dental team to be made aware of any concerning oral health issues that may lie underneath the tissues.

An important task your dental hygienist does for each and every patient is to evaluate your  overall oral health. They will examine your mouth for any signs of possible oral cancers, including sores, recessed and bleeding gums or oral lesions. They will chart and record this decay and disease and then consult your dentist for potential treatment options. The oral health realm is one where dental hygienists must work very closely with dentists.

After that, your dental hygienist will complete a full dental cleaning by using various tools to remove plaque and stains from your teeth and gums. They will assist you in flossing and then polishing your teeth. Depending on your last visit, they may complete a fluoride treatment to keep your tooth enamel strong and healthy.

Lastly, dental hygienists teach their patients how they can maintain their dental health at home. They instruct on how to properly brush and floss your teeth for optimal success. Your dental hygienist may also give nutritional counselling to help your overall dental health.
