Why Sedation?

Know someone who is anxious or even fearful of the dentist? Are they compromising their health due to this fear? Are they feeling as if it’s impossible to overcome it? Here at Blackburn Shoppes Dental Centre it is possible. Our staff and office are well equipped and trained in the psychological process of fear of the dentist and procedures that come along with it. We take pride in helping patients overcome this anxiety and fear by turning it into a comfortable and happy experience!

The purpose of the use of sedation is to make you as comfortable and relaxed as possible. It aids in the relaxation of both your mind and body, while eliminating apprehension and hypersensitivity as you remain awake and in control.

Inhalation Conscious Sedation, also known as “Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation”, or commonly referred to as laughing gas, has been used by dentists for nearly 100 years. Administered through a nasal hood, it is extremely safe because it’s mixed directly with oxygen to provide you with a feeling of euphoria or light-headedness. It is an excellent option for pain relief, but it is a less effective for ridding anxiety. However, its effects wear off almost immediately so there is no “hangover effect.”

Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation used by some dentists, and surgical specialists. This type of sedation is administered directly into the blood stream through the vein, working instantaneously, ridding pain and anxiousness. But there is a higher risk when it comes to IV sedation as normal bodily functions especially heart rate, blood pressure and breathing can be altered requiring specialized monitoring equipment. The drugs used for IV Sedation are more potent when given this way and amnesia may be more profound so it is important to have a friend or family member pick you up from your procedure and take you home to rest.

You are not alone. What you are feeling and experiencing is completely rational and we at Blackburn Shoppes Dental Centre are happy and eager to help you overcome these setbacks.
