Getting your teeth whitened is a simple process that can be done either at home or at your dental office. Stains on your teeth are a nuisance, and can often happen unexpectedly without a direct cause or reason. There are many factors that can weigh in on stained teeth from either lifestyle choice, or health problems. Here are some reasons why your teeth may be stained:

Diet/Lifestyle: Stains on teeth can often be caused by poor diets or lifestyle choices, such as smoking. Foods such as coffee, alcohol and sugary foods can stain the enamel on the outside of the tooth. These stains are easily treatable from a cleaning or whitening treatment at the dentist, but are likely to occur more often.

Damage: Stains that occur from the inside of the tooth can be seen as a grey or yellow tint, and can be caused by a number of things. Often this discolouration is formed by a trauma to a permanent tooth, such as breakage, internal bleeding or development issues. Other causes can be from exposure to fluoride at a young age, illness or improper use of antibiotics during pregnancy or young age. These stains are more complicated to remove and will need to be done by a whitening treatment, or cosmetic dental procedures.

Age: As a person ages, accumulation of consuming stain-prone foods and dental issues can cause discolouration. Age-related stains can be hard to prevent, but are treatable with various whitening treatments.
